COLORADO
State Index

Methodology

The Colorado Unity Index scores are composed using three weighted categories: (i) votes with the majority of one’s party, (ii) votes against the majority of one’s party, and (iii) the number of bills sponsored or prime co-sponsored with an opposite party member sponsor or cosponsor.

Votes with or against the majority of one’s party is weighted to account for outliers: i.e: if a legislator votes against a bill the majority of their party and the majority of the opposite party voted for, their score decreases.

The number of bills a legislator sponsors or prime co-sponsors with a member of the opposite party increases a legislator’s score. Co-sponsors who join the bill later in the legislative process are not included.
